DENVER - For the second straight day, Metro State split a doubleheader at home with Colorado Mines, winning game one 13-4 in five innings, before falling 2-0 in game two. Metro State is now 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSM is 7-11 and 2-2.
The shutout in game two was the first time since Feb. 22, 2009, that Metro State has been held scoreless, a streak of 114 consecutive games of scoring at least one run.
Game One
Metro State took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run single to left-center by
Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.). The Roadrunners added six more in the third.
Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) and Nichols each delivered two-run singles and
Brittney Padilla (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Central H.S.) also drove in a run with a base hit. Nichols scored the final run of the inning on an illegal pitch.
Metro State looked to finish the game after the top of the fifth, leading 8-0 after four innings. But the Orediggers extended the game with four runs on three hits and an error.
The Roadrunners answered right back with five in the bottom of the inning to end the game to the eight-run mercy rule. Nichols led off the inning with her third hit of the game.
Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) drove in the first run with a ground out to short for the second out. After
Julia Diehl (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) walked,
Lauren Hainlen (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) hit a double to left-center, scoring
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.).
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) then blasted a three-run home run to right-center to end the game.
Diehl earned the win, allowing three earned runs in five innings. Hainlen and Nichols each had three hits and Nichols drove in four.
Game Two
Colorado Mines scored twice in the top of the fifth, playing small ball by using an error, a walk and a bunt to push the two runs across.
The Roadrunners had a great opportunity in the first inning, leaving the bases loaded. They put runners on first and second in the bottom of the fifth with nobody out, but a baserunning error, a line out and a strikeout ended the inning with no runners reaching third base.
Maul suffered the loss, scattering five hits and allowing one earned run in seven innings, while striking out five.
Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) had two hits to lead the offense, which was held to just five hits after totaling 14 in game one.
Metro State will travel to Fort Lewis next weekend for a four-game series.
