GOLDEN, Colo. – Metro State drilled Colorado Mines 14-1 on the road on Sunday to complete a four-game sweep over the Orediggers. Metro State improved to 7-5 overall and 4-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSM fell to 2-14 and 0-8.
The Roadrunners quickly jumped out on top in the first inning, scoring three in the top of the inning.
Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and
David Kaplan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.) followed with a two-run double down the right field line.
Mines scored its only run in the bottom of the first thanks to two walks with one out.
Jordan Stouffer (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) hit a bases loaded triple in the top of the second with two outs to push the lead to 6-1.
David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) singled through the left side with one out in the fourth to score
Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.) from third base. After a double by Stouffer, and a fly out, Kaplan ripped another two-run double to right-center.
It was
Mike Coffey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.)'s turn to drill a two-run double in the fifth inning and Claus led off the sixth with a home run to give Metro State a 12-1 lead.
Alex Hill (Casper, Wyo./Kelly Walsh H.S.) singled through the left side in the eighth inning for his first career hit as
Ty Hancock (Winslow, Ariz./Winslow H.S.) scored on the play and
Brennan Brown (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) hit an RBI double to right to bring home
Jacob Trimble (Danville, Ill./Schlarman H.S.) for the final runs of the game.
Zach Cleveland (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) earned the win, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts in five innings.
Forrest Carpenter (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.),
Taylor Huyett (Broomfield, Colo./Legacy H.S.),
Joey Widhalm (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) and
Ryan Hutchinson (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) each threw a scoreless inning of relief.
Krueger led Metro State with three of the team's 16 hits. Coffey, Fox, Stouffer and Kaplan each had two hits.
Metro State will host Colorado State-Pueblo next weekend for a four-game series.
