Garcia's Walk-Off Forces Split with Her Former Team

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

DENVER –
Metro State's softball team earned a split on Sunday with Colorado State-Pueblo, winning game one 3-2 in eight innings on a walk-off home run by Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.), before falling 7-6 in game two.  The Roadrunners are now 13-7 overall and 8-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSUP is 6-11 and 5-7.

Garcia transferred to Metro State this year from CSU-Pueblo.  Her home run was her second of the season and Metro State's first walk-off home run since Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) blasted Metro State to a win over Wayne State (Neb.) in game one of the NCAA Super Regional last spring.

Game One
Metro State trailed 2-0 after the top of the fifth inning and needed a late-inning rally.

The Roadrunners squandered a leadoff walk in the first and back-to-back singles to start the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.) reached on a one-out single and Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) and Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) walked to load the bases. Roundtree fouled off five pitches with a 3-2 count to reach base. Then Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) was hit by a pitch to force in the first run. After a fielder's choice, Julia Diehl (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) drew another walk to force in the tying run.

Diehl pitched around trouble the entire game and had just one 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first. She left the ThunderWolves with the bases loaded in the sixth with a strikeout and escaped a two-out rally in the eighth.

Garcia then hit the walk-off home run to left-center with one out in the bottom of the eighth to end the game.

Game Two
Metro State played catch-up nearly the entire game and fell just short, making the final out of the game at home in the 7-6 loss.

CSU-Pueblo pushed the first run of the game across in the top of the first with the aid of a passed ball. Metro State tied the game with a solo home run by Clark in the bottom of the inning.

Again, the ThunderWolves took the lead with a two-out run in the third. A bases-loaded walk to Tesone tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

The Roadrunners actually took the lead briefly in the bottom of the fourth with two runs, highlighted by an RBI single by Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.).

CSUP answered with back to tie the game with two solo home runs in the top of the fifth and the ThunderWolves took the lead in the sixth on a two-run triple by Lacey Chesser with two outs.

Metro State got one run back after a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning, but gave it right back in the top of the seventh to trail 7-5 entering the final half-inning.

Garcia led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk. After Maul struck out for the first out, #Danni Hedstrom# walked. Tillery then flied out to center for the second out of the inning. Roundtree kept the inning alive with an RBI single to right-center. Clark then loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch to bring Tesone up with the winning run on second base. After working the count to 3-1, she took what was thought to be ball four and the runners started to advance a base. But the umpire called strike two and Hedstrom, who was on third base, was caught off the base for the final out as she thought she was advancing home on a walk.

Garcia and Tillery each had two hits to lead the offense. Maul allowed six earned runs in seven innings.

Metro State will host Chadron State next weekend.
