DENVER - Metro State hit four home runs and had eight extra-base hits in a sweep over Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday at home, winning 7-6 in game one and 13-6 in game two. The Roadrunners improved to 9-6 overall and CSU-Pueblo dropped to 11-9. The two teams moved into a tie for second place in the Mountain Division in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 6-5 record.
Game One
Metro State pounded out 11 hits and four extra-base hits in the seven-inning game.
Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) ripped an RBI single through the left side with two outs in the bottom of the first to score
Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.) for a 1-0 lead.
The ThunderWolves took a 2-1 lead with two in the top of the second.
The Roadrunners came back with five runs in the bottom of the third on five hits and two errors.
Jordan Stouffer (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) led off by lining a home run to left-center. Krueger also had a key two-run double into the left field corner and he scored on a single by
David Kaplan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.).
CSU-Pueblo scored three in the top of the fifth on J.T. Greenhood's second home run of the game. Kaplan hit a solo home run in the fifth, his first of the year.
The ThunderWolves scored once in the top of the seventh and left the tying run on third, but closer
Nate Van Bibber (Littleton, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) got a fly out to right to end the game.
Bradshaw Perry (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) earned the win, throwing 4.1 innings. Van Bibber finished it with 2.2 innings of relief. Kaplan, Claus and
Mike Coffey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) each had two hits.
Game Two
After CSU-Pueblo scored once in the top of the first, it was all Metro State. The Roadrunners scored four runs on no hits, using five walks in the bottom of the first for the early lead.
They added three more in the second after a leadoff double by
Eric Lopez (Hayden, Ariz./Hayden H.S.).
David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) later hit a sacrifice fly and Stouffer drove in a run with a double.
Metro State again scored three in the third to lead 10-1. Krueger hit a two-run home run and Fox had an RBI single.
The Roadrunners led 12-1 after a two-run single by Lopez in the fourth.
Kevin Coughlin (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) added a pinch hit home run in the sixth for a 13-3 lead after the ThunderWolves scored twice in the top of the fifth. CSU-Pueblo scored three times in the seventh.
Corey Collins (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) struck out seven and allowed five earned runs for the complete game victory. Lopez had two hits as the only player with more than one of Metro State's nine hits in the game.
The two teams will play a nine-inning game at Metro State at noon on Sunday.
