DENVER - Metro State used a walk-off home run to win a game for the second straight weekend as the host Roadrunners split with Chadron State on Saturday, winning game one 4-3 in nine innings and dropping game two 10-8. The Roadrunners are now 14-8 overall and 9-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Game One
Metro State scored all four of its runs on home runs and won it on a blast by
Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.) in the bottom of the ninth.
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to score Nichols.
The Eagles pushed across single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-2 lead.
A leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth by
Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) tied the game.
The Roadrunners failed to score in the eighth after the first two runners reached base. Nichols then hit her one-out walk-off to left field.
It was the second weekend in a row Metro State won on a walk-off home run after
Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) beat Colorado State-Pueblo last Sunday.
Julia Diehl (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) pitched a career-high nine innings and allowed just two earned runs in the win.
Game Two
Metro State never led in game two and found itself trying to play catch-up the whole way. CSC scored an unearned run in the first to lead 1-0.
After Garcia brought home Diehl with a single to left in the bottom of the second, the Eagles answered right back with three runs on four hits in the top of the third.
Metro State got one back on a sacrifice fly by
Lauren Hainlen (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) in the bottom, but the Eagles again scored three in the top of the fourth.
This time, the Roadrunners matched CSC's run total from the top of the inning as Nichols crushed a three-run home run.
Again, Chadron State scored three times in the top of the fifth and again Metro State matched that in the bottom of the inning. Garcia hit an RBI double, Nichols singled in a run and
Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly.
But that was the end of the scoring for both teams.
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) suffered the loss, giving up 10 runs in 4.1 innings.
Jes Mattes (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. Garcia was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Nichols was 2-for-4 with four runs batted in.
Both teams will meet at Metro State for two games on Sunday at 11 a.m.
