DENVER - Metro State pounded out 21 hits in two games on Sunday as the host Roadrunners swept Chadron State, winning 9-4 and 11-5. Metro State improved to 16-8 overall and 11-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSC fell to 7-14 and 6-10.
Game One
Metro State came ready to play, opening the game with five runs in the bottom of the first after forcing a scoreless top half of the inning.
Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) led off with a home run to left and it was all Roadrunners after that. Metro State had back-to-back two-run doubles by
Julia Diehl (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) and
Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) to take the early 5-0 lead.
Chadron State scored once in the second and twice in the fourth, but the Roadrunners countered with two in the bottom of the fourth.
Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.) ripped a two-run single to scored Roundtree and
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) for a 7-3 lead.
Lauren Hainlen (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) doubled with one out in the sixth after Clark led off with a walk and both scored on a single by Nichols, with Hainlen coming home with the aid of an error.
Diehl allowed one run in the top of the seventh and surrendered four runs in seven innings for the win. Nichols was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Diehl and Roundtree also had two hits each. Clark walked three times.
Game Two
Despite allowing a run in the top of the first, game two started similarly for the Roadrunners. They pushed across five once again in the bottom of the first. This time they had the aid of three errors, while Hainlen and
Kristen Gertner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) each had RBI singles and Nichols drove in a run with a double.
Hainlen, Nichols and Diehl hit consecutive singles in the second to add another run to the lead.
The Eagles scored once in the third, but Metro State answered with three more in the bottom of the inning.
Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly and Hainlen drove in another with a double.
Chadron State scored twice in the fourth and Roundtree brought home Garcia for one in the bottom of the inning.
The Eagles scored once in the fifth.
Garcia scored the final run of the game on a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) earned the win for the Roadrunners. Hainlen led the offense with three hits and Roundtree, Nichols and Gertner each had two hits. For Gertner, the two hits were the first two of her career.
Metro State will travel to New Mexico Highlands next weekend.
