Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

LAS VEGAS, N.M. -
Metro State swept New Mexico Highlands on the road on Saturday, winning 5-1 and 9-0 in Las Vegas, N.M.  The wins improved the Roadrunners to 18-6 overall and 13-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while NMHU fell to 6-23 and 3-15.

Game One
Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) blasted two home runs to tie the Metro State career record at 47 in the 5-1 victory.  Tara Mickelson (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) set the record last season.

It was all about the long ball for the Roadrunners as they hit four solo shots as Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) also hit a pair.

Highlands actually led 1-0 after the bottom of the first, pushing its only run across after four straight singles opened the inning.

Starter Julia Diehl (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) settled down, allowing just three hits the rest of the game, all singles.

Metro State's bats heated up in the third as Clark and Tesone hit back-to-back home runs and Lauren Hainlen (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) followed with a triple into the right field corner.  She later scored on a two-out double by Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.).

Clark hit another home run in the fourth and Tesone added her second in the top of the seventh.

The two combined for four of Metro State's six hits in the game, though the Roadrunners drew seven walks.  Diehl struck out four for the win.

Game Two
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) turned in her best pitching performance in her first season in the circle, throwing her first career shutout.  Maul fanned eight batters and scattered six hits in seven innings.

Meanwhile, the offense continued to click as Metro State had 10 hits.

The Roadrunners jumped on top in the first inning as Tesone scored on a bases loaded walk to Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.).  They added five in the third as Tesone, Diehl, Nichols and Garcia each had singles and Danni Hedstrom (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) cleaned up the mess with a grand slam with one out in the inning.

Diehl scored the seventh run in the sixth inning on a single to left by Hedstrom.  Diehl drove in a run with a single in the seventh and Garcia forced in another run with a walk to cap Metro State's scoring.

Hedstrom tied career highs with five runs batted in and three hits.  Diehl and Garcia also had two hits each.

The two teams will play a doubleheader again on Sunday at 11 am.
