LAS VEGAS, N.M. - The Metro State softball team extended its winning streak to a season-high six games with a sweep at New Mexico Highlands on Sunday, winning game one 11-2 in six innings and game two 6-4. The Roadrunners improved to 20-8 overall and 15-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while NMHU fell to 6-25 and 3-17.
The sweep moved Metro State back into a tie for first place in the RMAC as Colorado Mines split with Regis on Sunday.
Game One
The Roadrunners put up a four-spot in the top of the first inning as their first four batters reached base.
Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) had an RBI single and
Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) drove in two with a base hit with one out.
Tesone then broke the Metro State all-time home run record with her 48th career blast to lead off the third inning. She hit two on Saturday to tie the record of 47 set by
Tara Mickelson (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) last spring.
The Cowgirls manufactured a run in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 5-1.
Lauren Hainlen (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home
Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) and
Julia Diehl (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) followed with an RBI single to score
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) as the Roadrunners took a 7-1 lead in the fourth.
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) connected on a home run in the fifth. The Roadrunners put the game away in the sixth with three more runs. Clark and Tesone led off with back-to-back doubles and Maul later had a two-out, two-run single through the right side.
Highlands added one run in the bottom of the sixth, but the game ended to the eight-run mercy rule.
Diehl allowed two runs in six innings for the win and struck out three. She did not walk a batter.
Tesone was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and Maul and Garcia each had two hits.
Game Two
Metro State again got off to a great start with three runs in the top of the first. Roundtree led off the game with a double and scored on Diehl's two-run single. Garcia later brought Hainlen in on a fielder's choice.
The Cowgirls scored once in the bottom of the second. The two teams went scoreless for the next three innings until Metro State scored twice in the sixth. Garcia led off with a double and scored on a double by
Brittney Padilla (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Central H.S.).
Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.) scored the fifth run on a wild pitch.
NMHU scored one in the bottom of the sixth.
Danni Hedstrom (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) singled home Hainlen in the seventh for Metro State's final run. The Cowgirls scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Maul earned the win, allowing two earned runs in seven innings. She struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Diehl led the offense with two hits.
Metro State will host UC-Colorado Springs for a four-game series next weekend.
