Softball Sweeps at Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo. -
Metro State swept a softball doubleheader at Fort Lewis on Saturday, winning 15-13 and 8-4 in Durango, Colo.  The Roadrunners improved to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while FLC fell to 4-7 overall and 3-3.

Game One
The Roadrunners came out on top in a wild one, pounding out 17 hits and four home runs.  Metro State scored six times in the top of the first, using five walks, three hits and an error.  Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.), Lauren Hainlen (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) and Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) each delievered RBI singles.

Fort Lewis scored twice in the bottom of the inning and three times in the second to cut the lead to 6-5.

The Roadrunners broke through for five more in the third as Hainlen ripped a three-run home run.

Fort Lewis answered right back with five of its own on three extra-base hits, including a two-run home run by Kayla Bruner to chase starter Julia Diehl (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.).

Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) hit a two-run home run in the fourth and Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) hit a solo shot in the fifth for a 15-10 lead.

The Skyhawks scored twice in the bottom of the sixth.  Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.) hit her first career home run in the sixth.  FLC added one in the bottom of the seventh.

Jes Mattes (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) earned her first career victory, allowing four runs in 4.1 innings of relief.  Hainlen had a career-high four hits and tied a career high with four runs batted in.  Roundtree, Tesone and Danni Hedstrom (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) each had two hits.

Game Two
Roundtree got things started in the right foot, blasting a home run to lead off the game.  Fort Lewis tied the game in the bottom of the second before Roundtree hit another home run in the third.  Tesone then scored on a single by Diehl for a 3-1 lead in the third.

The Skyhawks tied the game in the fourth with two more runs.

Diehl then hit a three-run homer in the fifth to put Metro State back in front 6-3.  Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) hit a two-run shot in the seventh before FLC scored its final run in the bottom of the inning.

Maul picked up the win in the circle, throwing all seven innings.  Roundtree and Diehl each had two of the team's six hits.

Both teams will meet again Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
