DURANGO, Colo. - The Metro State softball team split a doubleheader on Sunday against Fort Lewis in Durango, Colo., falling 6-4 on a walk-off home run in game one, before rebounding with a 14-3, five-inning victory in game two. Metro State is now 10-6 overall and 5-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while FLC is 5-8 and 4-4.
Game One
Metro State dominated for six innings, but allowed four runs in the bottom of the seventh and lost 6-4 on a three-run, walk-off home run by Cierra Walters.
For the second straight game,
Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) led off the game with a home run and the Roadrunners added another in the third on three walks to take a 2-0 lead.
Fort Lewis tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a pair, including a solo home run.
Lauren Hainlen (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) blasted a one-out, two-run home run in the fifth for a 4-2 lead.
But the Skyhawks rallied with four in the seventh and Walters hit her walk-off homer with two outs to end the game.
Julia Diehl (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) suffered the loss in the circle.
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) led the offense with a 2-for-2 performance.
Game Two
The Skyhawks hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first to lead 2-0, but it was all Metro State after that.
The Roadrunners pushed five runs across in the top of the second as the bats came alive.
Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.) drove in the first run with a single down the left field line.
Danni Hedstrom (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) followed with an RBI double to left-center to tie the game. Roundtree later hit a two-out, three-run home run to cap the inning.
Two more came home in the third as Hedstrom hit a two-run single with two outs to score Diehl and Hainlen.
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) belted a two-run homer in the fourth and Diehl hit another as Metro State took a 10-2 lead.
The Roadrunners scored four more times in the fifth with the help of two errors and a two-run double by Diehl.
The Skyhawks scored one in the bottom of the inning. Maul picked up the win, allowing only four hits.
Metro State will return home to host Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday and Sunday for four games.
