KEARNEY, Neb. - Metro State's softball team split a doubleheader with Adams State on Sunday in Kearney, Neb., winning game one 10-9, before suffering its worst loss in school history, 17-2 in five innings in the second. The Roadrunners are now 24-11 overall and 19-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Grizzlies are 22-19 and 14-14.
Game One
Metro State twice rallied from deficits and held off an ASC comeback in the top of the seventh for the 10-9 victory.
The Roadrunner belted a season-high five home runs in the victory, all coming in the final four innings.
The Grizzlies jumped on top with a two-run home run in the top of the first.
Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) led off the bottom of the inning with a single and scored on a fielder's choice by
Lauren Hainlen (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) to cut the lead in half.
Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) ripped a two-out double down the right field line in the third and tied the game after back-to-back singles by Hainlen and
Julia Diehl (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.).
But Adams State came right back with four in the top of the fourth to lead 6-2.
Again, the Roadrunners answered and they scored five times in the bottom of the inning for a 7-6 lead.
Caitlin Jenks (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) crushed a two-run home run with nobody out and
Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.) followed with a solo shot. After Roundtree was hit by a pitch, Metro State took the lead for good on a two-run homer by
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.).
Metro State struck again in the sixth.
Danni Hedstrom (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) hit a two-run home run to score pinch runner
Annie Naranjo (Denver/Lakewood H.S.) and
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) followed with a home run of her own as the Roadrunners went back-to-back for the second time in the game, capping a three-run inning.
After Diehl retired the first ASC batter in the top of the seventh, three straight Grizzlies reached base, including back-to-back home runs by Jaycee Lovato and Lizzy Schossow to for the Roadrunners to the bullpen in the one-run game. Reliever
Jes Mattes (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) allowed the first two batters to reach, but got two pop ups to end the game for her first career save.
Clark, Diehl, Hedstrom and Maul each led the offense with two hits.
Game Two
Sunday's second game was a disaster from the start. Adams State scored its first seven runs on home runs and never looked back, jumping out to a 7-2 lead after two innings.
The Grizzlies scored twice in the first, five times in the second, three times in the third and fourth each, and four times in the fifth.
Metro State scored both of its runs in the first inning on one-out RBI singles by Diehl and Hedstrom.
The 17 runs allowed were the most in school history, topping the previous record of 14 reached three times, most recently in 1988 by Nebraska-Kearney.
Metro State will play at Mesa State next weekend.
