Softball Team Swept By UCCS for First Roughest Day Since 2009

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

DENVER -
The Metro State softball teams was swept by UC-Colorado Springs 2-0 and 5-2 at home on Saturday.  It was the first time Metro State had lost two games on the same day since Feb. 9, 2009, against Fort Hays State.  The Roadrunners fell to 20-10 overall and 15-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the last-place Mountain Lions improved to 12-19 overall and 9-13 in the RMAC.

Game One
UCCS righthander Becca Smith fooled the Roadrunners all day, taking advantage of a generous strike zone to record 11 strikeouts in the complete game shutout.  It was the second time Metro State has been shut out this season, the first time the team has been shut out twice in the same season since 1990.

Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.), Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) and Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) each had two hits, but the rest of the team had just one, that coming from Lauren Hainlen (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) as the Roadrunners stranded 12 runners on base in the game.

Julia Diehl (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) pitched a gem for the Roadrunners allowing just seven hits and one walk for two runs in seven innings for the loss.

Game Two
Again the Metro State offense was stifled as it managed just four hits off Jessica Belsterling.  To make things tougher, Metro State tied a season high with four errors as Maul gave up just two earned runs in seven innings.

The Roadrunners scored both of their runs in the bottom of the second after falling behind 1-0 in the top of the inning.  Maul delivered a bases-loaded singled down the right field line with nobody out for the first run and Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.) later came home before Maul was caught in a rundown between second and third for the final out of the inning as the team had two baserunning miscues in the inning.

Both teams will play another doubleheader at Metro State at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
