DENVER -
Sean Reeves (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) blasted a three-run home run to cap a nine-run bottom of the ninth inning as Metro State rallied to win 11-8 over Colorado Mines at home on Sunday.  The win gave the Roadrunners the four-game series sweep and improved them to 28-12 overall and 24-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Mines fell to 15-29 and 12-22 in the RMAC.  Metro State remains atop the Mountain Division in the RMAC and 1.5 games out of first overall.

It was one of the most dramatic comebacks in school history.  Trailing 8-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, eight straight batters reached base after the first batter was retired via strikeout.

Reeves started the rally, reaching on an error by the shortstop.  He scored on a double down the left field line by Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.)Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.) and David Kaplan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.) then hit back-to-back singles, cutting the lead to 8-4.

David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) crushed a 2-0 pitch over the left-center fence, cutting the lead to one as the rally continued.  Jordan Stouffer (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) singled and Brennan Brown (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) walked before Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) lined a single through the left side to score Stouffer from second and tie the game.

Kevin Coughlin (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) crushed the first pitch he saw well over the left field fence onto the far side of Auraria Parkway, but it went just foul.  Coughlin was then retired on strikes for the second out.  Reeves came up and took two fastballs up and in before ripping his home run to left field to end the game.

It was the first hit all season for Reeves, who was a pinch hitter to start the ninth inning.  He had just eight at bats entering the game.

Reeves' blast gave senior Joey Widhalm (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) his first career win in the final home game of his career.  Widhalm has played at Metro State all four years and began his career as a two-way player, before giving up his outfield duties as a junior.  It was his 20th career appearance on the hill.  He pitched a scoreless top of the ninth on Sunday.

Claus belted a solo home run in the second and Fox drove in Kaplan with a double in the third for a 2-0 lead.

Mines then scored eight straight runs, four coming on a grand slam by Jordan Williams in the seventh inning to take the 8-2 lead.

The Roadrunners were retired in order in the seventh and eighth before the ninth inning rally.

Krueger, Kaplan, Fox and Claus each had two hits.  All nine starters reached base in the game.  Jacob Trimble (Danville, Ill./Schlarman H.S.) had three plate appearances, but no at bats as he walked twice and was hit by a pitch before being removed for Reeves in the bottom of the ninth.

Starter Zach Cleveland (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) allowed seven earned runs in seven innings.  His final numbers did not reflect the strong start as four of the runs came on the grand slam.

Metro State will travel to Colorado State-Pueblo to wrap up the regular season on Friday and Saturday.
