GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Metro State was held to just seven hits as Colorado State-Pueblo topped the Roadrunners 7-2 on Thursday in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament. The Roadrunners fell to 29-16 this season, while CSUP improved to 28-23.
Metro State got off to a strong start as
Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.) led off the bottom of the first with a home run to right field.
But the Roadrunners could not come up with a clutch hit over the next two innings and then went cold. They left two runners on in the second inning and left the bases loaded in the third.
The ThunderWolves broke through with four runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. They added three more on a home run by Kyle Wager in the eighth inning to lead 7-1.
David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) belted a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the eighth, but that was the final baserunner for Metro State.
Bradshaw Perry (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) suffered the loss, allowing just three earned runs in six innings and struck out seven. But he also walked seven and allowed five hits.
Metro State will face No. 1 seed Nebraska-Kearney at 3:30 p.m. on Friday in the double elimination tournament.
