DENVER - Carly Nelson (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) scored for No. 7 Metro State at 10:33 to give the host Roadrunners a 1-0 win over New Mexico Highlands. Metro State is off to a 6-0-0 start this season, including 2-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while the Cowgirls fell to 2-3-0 and 1-1-0. It is Metro State's best start to a season since its 2006 national championship season when the Roadrunners won their first 12 games.
Nelson took a pass from the
Aubrey Fondy (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) on the left side, dribbled towards the center of the field and fired a shot from the top of the box for the game's only goal.
Both teams had several chances. The best chance besides Nelson's goal for the Roadrunners was a shot from
Kelci Newlin (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) in the center of the box following a corner kick that led to a diving save by NMHU goalkeeper Bianca Contreras.
Cowgirl Julissa Rodriguez had two chances to tie the game late. She blasted a free kick from 25 yards out just over the crossbar at 78:57 and missed from the close right wing just left of the net at 86:10. Earlier in the game, Metro State defender
Jade Ryals (Monument, Colo./Lewis-Palmer H.S.) broke up a breakaway by Rodriguez, sliding in to kick the ball out of bounds from the center of the box.
Roadrunner goalkeeper
Danielle Quigley (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) made two saves to earn her second shutout this season. Metro State held a 14-10 shot advantage.
The Roadrunners will travel to Regis University for an afternoon game on Wednesday.
