DENVER –
Metro State women's soccer used two early goals to open the season with a 3-2 victory on Friday over Upper Iowa at home.

Taylor Nicholls (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) opened the scoring 5:20 into the game, heading Abby Rolph (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.)'s corner kick straight into the net.

Karisa Price (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland H.S.) scored on another header just 10 minutes later, this time coming off Camilla Rodrigues (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/The American School of Belo Horizonte)' service.

Nicholls had a chance at 18:26 to push the lead to 3-0, but her shot deflected off the right post.

The Roadrunners continued to dominate play in the first half, but Upper Iowa was handed a penalty kick after Corrine Wronski went down on a tackle in the box.  Allison Clark converted the kick to cut the lead in half.

The Peacocks tied the game at 56:41 as Jill Schechinger scored from the close right wing.

Metro State caught a break just four minutes later as Price's cross from the left corner deflected off a UIU defender into the net.

Neither team mounted much of a scoring chance over the final 30 minutes.  The best opportunity came from Metro State in the 76th minute when Price connected one touch on Rolph's cross from the right corner in front of the net, but sent it high over the net.

Danielle Quigley (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) made four saves to earn the win in her first start for Metro State.

The Roadrunners outshot UIU 30-9 and had 19 shots on goal.  Upper Iowa goalkeeper Amanda Smith made 15 saves.

Metro State will host McPherson (Kan.) College on Sunday at noon.
