Box Score DENVER - Freshman
Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) netted a hat trick for Metro State as the host Roadrunners defeated Adams State 6-0 on Tuesday. The two teams met on Sunday in Alamosa, Colo., as well, with MSU winning that contest 4-0.
The Roadrunners were led by Arrubla, who scored three goals. It was the first hat trick by a Metro State freshman since 2004 (Phillip Owen, Oct. 9, 2004 vs. Embry Riddle) and the first ever for a freshman against an RMAC opponent.
Another Roadrunner career first happened in the 88th minute when redshirt freshman
Jacob Candelaria (Albuquerque, N.M./St. Pius X Catholic H.S.) scored his first goal of his career.
The Roadrunners started the scoring early on when
Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) scored his first goal of the game in the fourth minute. Arrubla's header was flicked over the goalie as he was charging on the play. The goal came off a header pass from
Brenden Hughes (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) after a long cross from
Kevin Pocalyko (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.).
Metro State scored again in the 37th minute when
Marc Herschberger (Westminster, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) scored his 10th goal of the season after settling a pass from Piece Galan and firing it from the top of the box past the goalie. The goal game the Roadrunners a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
The Roadrunners continued their aggressive nature in the second half and capitalized on one of their opportunities in the 60th minute when Arrubla scored his second goal of the game. Arrubla was able to kick the ball out of the air while he was charging the goal on a cross from
Pierce Galan (Phoenix/Seton Catholic H.S.).
Ten minutes later, Arrubla scored his third goal of the game when he received the rebound from his first attempt that was blocked and shot the ball from the top of the box past a diving goalie. The goal gave Arrubla his 12th of the season.
In the 77th minute, defender
Andrew Mejia (Littleton, Colo./Mullen H.S.) decided to get in on the scoring affair as he came forward on a fast break and shot the ball from the right side across the goal just inside the far post to give the Roadrunners a 5-0 advantage. The goal was Mejia's second of the season.
The final goal for the Roadrunners came in the 88th minute when Candelaria was able to center the ball up at the top of the box and drive it into the back of the net off a cross from
Koko Zarov (Vidin, Bulgaria/Asen Zlatarov).
The Roadrunners held a 33-2 shot advantage in the game as they attempted a season high for both shots (33) and shots on goal (17). The two shots allowed were the fewest since allowing two to ASU in 2010.
Issa Bissau (Denver, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) who came off in the 70th minute picked up the win to increase his record to 3-0-1 on the season. The Roadrunners will be back in action on Sunday when they host UC-Colorado Springs at 2:30 p.m. for their final regular season game.
