Box Score DENVER - No. 11 Metro State snapped a two-game losing streak on Saturday with an 83-73 win on homecoming over Nebraska-Kearney at the Auraria Event Center. The Roadrunners improved to 19-5 overall and 14-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UNK fell to 13-9 overall and 11-8 in the RMAC.
Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) scored a game-high 26 points and pulled down eight rebounds with three assists.
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) had 19 points and ripped down 15 rebounds, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor and 7-of-7 at the line. He also had two steals and two blocked shots.
Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) poured in 13 points, shooting 5-of-9.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) added 11 points, six assists and five steals.
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) grabbed seven rebounds and had six points.
Metro ended the first half on a 9-1 run to take a 43-35 into halftime. Both teams shot 50 percent from the floor, but the Roadrunners forced 12 UNK turnovers in the first half.
Morse led Metro with 15 first-half points, hitting 5-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-5 at the line. He also grabbed six rebounds. Evans had 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting. However, the Roadrunners had trouble stopping UNK guard Jon Henderson, who had 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers in the first half.
Metro stretched its lead to 14 points at 73-59 with 7:34 left on a fastbreak layup by
Tyler Cooper (Huntington Beach, Calif./Christian Heritage H.S.). However, the Lopers cut that lead to 73-70 with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes.
Evans finally ended the scoring drought with 3:22 left to push the lead back to five, hitting a jumper in the paint.
After a free throw by Jefferson following technical foul UNK head coach Tom Kropp with 1:48 left, Metro held a 76-70 lead. Evans followed with a tough basket through traffic in the lane to push the lead to 78-70 with 1:19 to go.
Metro made 5-of-8 at the free throw line in the final minute to hold on for the win.
For the game, the Roadrunners scored 24 points off 21 turnovers , and committed just nine. That helped them overcome a -10 rebounding margin (38-to-48).
Freshman Ethan Brozek led UNK with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Henderson finished with 22 points, but fouled out with 3:06 left. Chris Deans scored 15 points and also had 15 rebounds.
The Roadrunners will travel to Western New Mexico on Friday.
