PUEBLO, Colo. -
Metro State split a season-opening doubleheader with Hastings (Neb.) on Saturday in Pueblo, Colo., winning 6-3 in game one and falling 3-1 in game two. Hastings is now 3-3 on the season.

Game One
The Roadrunners fell behind 2-0 in the top of the second, but lefthander Justin Arceneaux (Chino, Calif./Don Antonio Lugo H.S.) settled down in his first career appearance for Metro to earn the complete game victory. Arceneaux gave up just three runs in seven innings and struck out seven, while giving up six hits and walking two.

Freshman Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) singled in his first collegiate at bat in the third inning and Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.) also followed with a single. After a pop out by Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.), Robbie Nickels (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon H.S.) ripped a single through the left side to score Metro's first run. Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

The Broncos scored one again in the fourth to take the lead, but a leadoff double by Cammall in the fifth and another RBI single by Nickels evened the score at 3-3.

Gavin Purvis (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola H.S.) led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and the Roadrunners took advantage of three Hastings errors to score three times in the inning to win 6-3.

Arceneaux retired the final nine batters he faced, including four strikeouts.

Cammall went 3-for-3 and Nickels was 2-for-4.

Game Two
Righthander Patrick Gojan (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista H.S.) gave Metro another strong outing on the mound, allowing three runs in a seven-inning complete game. But Metro's bats went cold in the second game as Hastings righthander Addison Ives allowed just four hits in 6 2/3 innings for the win.

Gojan gave up all three runs in the top of the second, falling victim to a pair of infield hits to start the inning.

Daron Schulthies (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) drove in Metro State's only run in the fourth inning with a two-out single to score Schrupp.

The Roadrunners tried to put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh as Schulthies extended the game with another base hit, but reliever Mack Land retired Gibbons on a ground out to second to end the game.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday for a doubleheader in Pueblo at 11 a.m.
