PUEBLO, Colo. -
Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) delivered a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth of game two to give Metro State a sweep over Hastings (Neb.) on Sunday in Pueblo as the Roadrunners won 12-5 and 9-8. Metro improved to 3-1 on the season, while HC fell to 3-5.

Game One
Metro's bats came alive in the 12-5 victory as the Roadrunners connected for 12 hits, including three doubles.

Metro scored five times in the bottom of the first to take a 5-1 lead. Claus ripped a single to center to score Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) for the first run. Daron Schulthies (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) delivered a two-out, two-run single up the middle and Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) followed with a two-run double to right-center.

The Roadrunners scored an unearned run in the second and led 9-1 after three. Jacobs had an RBI single to score Gibbons. Metro took advantage of two walks and a hit batter in the inning.

Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.) came through with a two-out single through the left side in the fourth to score Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and the Roadrunners added two more in the sixth as Schulthies and Gibbons again delivered back-to-back run-scoring hits.

Gibbons was 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs batted in and a run scored. Schulthies was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Freshman Mike Thill (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) settled down after allowing a run on four hits in the first inning, blanking the Broncos over the next three innings, including 1-2-3 innings in the second and fourth. HC finally got to him again in the fifth as Mike Tomlin hit a two-run home run.

Reliever Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) came in with two outs in the fifth and allowed one run in 2 1/3 innings.

Game Two
Hastings led 8-5 after the top of the fourth, but the Roadrunners fought their way back with one in the bottom of the fourth and three in the sixth.

Gavin Purvis (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola H.S.) drilled a two-run double off the center field fence in the first inning and Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) had an RBI single as the Roadrunners led 3-2 after one.

In the third inning, it was Baca's two-run double off the wall that put Metro in front 5-4.

But the Broncos scored four times in the top of the fourth to take a three-run lead. Danny Miller (Denver/Denver Christian H.S.) led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and Metro manufactured a run with a walk, a sacrifice and a groundout by Cammall that scored Miller.

After going scoreless in the fifth, the Roadrunners took advantage of a one-out error in the sixth. Forrest Carpenter (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. After back-to-back singles by Gibbons and Jacobs loaded the bases, Cammall hit a sacrifice fly to left to cut the deficit to 8-7. Schrupp was then hit by a pitch before Claus ripped his single into right-center field to win the game.

Jacobs came on in the bottom of the seventh and earned the save, striking out one.

Ryan Hutchinson (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) earned his first career win, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. He did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out two.

Metro State will host Regis University at 3 p.m. on Friday at Auraria Field.
