DENVER - UC-Colorado Springs swept Metro State in softball on Sunday at Auraria Field, falling 8-2 in game one and 13-7 in game two. The Roadrunners fell to 3-11 overall and 0-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UCCS improved to 4-2 and 2-0.
Game One
Jessica Belsterling was effectively wild for the Mountain Lions, walking eight batters and allowing five hits, but the Roadrunners scored just two runs (one earned) off her in seven innings. Metro State stranded 13 runners on base as the bats could not connect with two outs all game.
UCCS led 3-0 after the top of the first. Metro scored an unearned run in the second when
Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) scored on a bases-loaded walk to
Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.). The Roadrunners added another in the third on a solo home run to left by
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.).
Freshman
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) led the Roadrunners with two hits.
Game Two
Metro had a rough time with two outs once again, this time when the Roadrunners were on defense in the late innings.
UCCS scored five runs in the third for an early 5-0 lead.
Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.) and
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) each hit two-run home runs in the fourth inning with nobody out to cut the deficit to 5-4.
After a UCCS run in the top of the fifth, the Roadrunners scored three times in the bottom to lead 7-5.
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) led off with a ground rule double and Nichols and Tillery each singled with no outs to spark the rally. Maul later drove in pinch runner
Alyssa Carter (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) with a ground rule double and Tillery scored on a groundout by
Sam Talmich (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.).
But the wheels fell off in the top of the sixth. Melissa DeWitt hit a grand slam with two outs to hand the Mountain Lions the lead again. They scored three more times in the seventh.
Mariah Griego (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) had three hits and Nichols, Tillery and Maul each had two.
Metro State will travel to Black Hills State (S.D.) for a four-game series next weekend.
