DENVER - Metro State's softball team split a doubleheader at home with UC-Colorado Springs on Monday, winning 12-4 in game one in six innings and falling 14-4 in six innings in game two. The Roadrunners are now 4-12 overall and 1-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and UCCS is 5-3 and 3-1. It is the first time since Metro State added softball in 2008 that the Roadrunners have lost a four-game conference series.
Game One
The bats came alive as the Roadrunners rallied from an early deficit for the run-rule win. UCCS scored twice in the top of the first, but Metro answered with four in the bottom of the inning.
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) singled with one out and scored on an error.
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.) delivered a two-run home run for a 3-2 lead and
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) later hit a double to score
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.).
UCCS scored once in the second and again in the third to tie the game.
After both teams went scoreless in the fourth, the Roadrunners broke open for five runs in the fifth.
Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.) opened the inning with a home run to left.
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) later added an RBI double and
Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.) connected for a two-run single.
Towner hit a one-out, two-run homer in the sixth and Nichols walked with the bases loaded to end the game on the eight-run mercy rule.
Clark, Nichols and Towner each had two of Metro State's 11 hits in the game.
Maul turned in a strong performance in the circle, allowing three earned runs in six innings to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Game Two
UCCS ripped 16 hits, including six doubles, in the 14-4 Mountain Lions win.
Brittany Moss (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) lasted just four outs for Metro, allowing seven runs on seven hits as the Roadrunners trailed 9-0 after the top of the third.
Nichols singled home Clark in the third inning to trim the deficit to 9-1.
Maul hit a solo home run in the fourth and the Roadrunners scored twice in the fifth on a two-run single by Nichols.
But UCCS came back with five in the top of the sixth and the Roadrunners went down in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
