TURLOCK, Calif. – Metro State went 0-2 on Sunday at the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational softball tournament, falling 2-0 to Cal State Dominguez Hills and 14-2 in five innings to No. 15 Chico State (Calif.). The Roadrunners dropped to 2-5 on the season.
Game One
The Roadrunners narrowly escaped getting no-hit for the first time since 1990 as Toros righthander Stephanie Jimenez was nearly untouchable. The junior allowed two baserunners in the complete game shutout, striking out 10.
Brittney Padilla (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Central H.S.) was Metro's first baserunner, reaching on a walk in the third inning. She was stranded at second after a stolen base.
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) came up with the only hit of the game for the Roadrunners, leading off the bottom of the seventh with a base hit to right field. But she didn't advance past second base.
The lack of run support handed
Brittany Moss (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) a tough loss as the junior allowed just two runs in seven innings and struck out three.
CSUDH scored both of its runs on a two-out, two-run single by Jessica Hall in the fifth inning.
Game Two
Metro State gave up one run in the first, eight in the second and five in the third to fall behind 14-0 after three innings.
The Roadrunners scored their only two runs in the bottom of the fifth before the game was called for the mercy rule.
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) and
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.) led off with back-to-back doubles and Brew scored later on an error.
Jordyn Randolph (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) (0-3) suffered the loss.
Metro State will head to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Desert Stinger Invitational next weekend.
