DENVER - Metro State split a doubleheader with Colorado Mines in baseball at home on Saturday, falling 2-1 in game one and winning 13-5 in game two. The Roadrunners are now 5-7 this season and 2-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Mines is now 4-7 and 2-4.
Game One
Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) was nearly flawless for five innings, allowing just one hit. But the Orediggers connected for two hits and took advantage of a defensive miscue that led to two runs as the Roadrunners blew a 1-0 lead. After a sacrifice fly tied the game, Tyler Phan Thornton stole home when a pickoff throw a lazy pickoff throw to first allowed just enough time for Thornton to make it home safely from third.
The Roadrunners then went down in order in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to hand Hammett the tough loss.
Hammett struck out eight and allowed just three hits in the loss.
Game Two
Metro broke open a 1-0 lead with 12 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to lead 13-5 after six, the final score of the game.
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three runs batted in for the game. He drove in the first run of the game with a single to score
Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) with two outs in the first.
Freshman
Austin Hearne (Denver/Thomas Jefferson H.S.) ripped his first career hit, a two-run double with the bases loaded in the fourth to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.) followed with a two-run single for a 5-0 lead.
Baca pushed the lead to 7-2 with a two-run blast for his third home run of the season in the fifth.
Metro scored six times in the bottom of the sixth.
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.),
Daron Schulthies (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.),
Forrest Carpenter (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) and
Anthony Sylvester (Morrison, Colo./D'Evelyn H.S.) all had run-scoring singles in the inning.
Freshman
Mike Thill (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) earned the win, allowing two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings for the win.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Auraria Field.
