Baseball falls in extras to Mines

DENVER -
Colorado Mines scored once in the eighth to tie the game and one more time in the 10th inning for a 7-6 win at Metro State on Sunday. The Roadrunners fell to 5-9 overall and 2-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSM improved to 5-7 and 4-4.

Metro State took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out RBI double by Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.). The Roadrunners turned to closer Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) for six outs, but he allowed three straight batters to reach base with one out in the eighth as the Orediggers tied it up.

With the score remaining in the 10th inning, CSM got a two-out single by Jordan Williams, his fourth hit of the game, to score Tyler Phan Thornton for the 7-6 lead.

Reliever Eric Shannon retired the Roadrunners in order in the 10th to earn the win with 4 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.

Metro State took a 2-1 lead with a pair of doubles by Austin Hearne (Denver/Thomas Jefferson H.S.) and Jacobs in the third.

The Roadrunners scored two more times in the fourth for a 4-1 lead.

Starter Carlos Luzon (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Instituto Escuela) allowed just one run through five innings, but ran out of gas in the sixth, surrendering three runs, including two with two-out single by Zach Bothwell.

CSM tied the game against reliever Daron Schulthies (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) with two doubles in the seventh.

Robbie Nickels (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon H.S.) led Metro with three hits at the plate.

Metro State will travel to Colorado State-Pueblo for a four-game series Friday through Sunday.
