Softball splits at UNK behind Tillery's blast

KEARNEY, Neb. -
Metro State's softball team split a doubleheader at Nebraska-Kearney on Wednesday, falling 3-1 in game one before a 5-3 victory after a two-run home run by Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.) in the top of the seventh. The Roadrunners are now 8-16 overall and 5-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UNK is 6-10 and 3-7.

Game One
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) was nearly flawless in the circle for the Roadrunners, allowing no earned runs in six innings. But Metro's bats went cold, scoring one run on five hits.

The Lopers took advantage of two errors in the thrid inning, scoring three unearned runs.

Metro finally scored in the sixth after a leadoff double by Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) and a single by Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.). But the Roadrunners were retired in order in the bottom of by Kirstie Hiatt as she allowed just one run in seven innings for the win.

Game Two
Tillery broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run to center as Metro rallied for its second win in the past four games.

Tillery led the way offensively with three hits.

The Roadrunners took a 3-0 lead in the fifth with three unearned runs, aided by a two-run single by Garcia with two outs after two UNK errors.

The Lopers came back with two in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game.

Brittney Padilla (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Central H.S.) led off the seventh with a single and was moved to second by a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Taney (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) before Tillery's homer.

Starter Jordyn Randolph (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) (1-6) earned her first career win, scattering 10 hits and three runs in seven innings with four strikeouts and no walks.

Metro State will travel to New Mexico Highlands on Saturday.
