DENVER - Metro State and Colorado Christian both rallied for victories as the two teams split a doubleheader at Auraria Field on Friday. The Roadrunners scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth for an 11-9 win in game one and CCU scored three times in the top of the seventh for a 4-3 victory. Metro is now 6-14 overall and 3-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Cougars are 4-18 and 3-11.
Game One
Metro took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on three straight RBI singles by
Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.),
Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) and
Daron Schulthies (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.). But the Cougars scored once in the seventh and three times in the eighth for an 8-4 lead.
A back-to-back doubles by
Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) and
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) cut the deficit to 8-7 with one out. After a fly out, Gibbons singled to center and Schulthies walked.
Gavin Purvis (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola H.S.) then ripped his first career home run to left-center, giving the Roadrunners a 10-8 lead.
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) later scored on a single by
Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.).
Tanner Roth (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) earned the win, retiring the two batters he faced in the eighth to strand a pair of Cougars. Jacobs picked up the save, allowing one run in the ninth.
Justin Arceneaux (Chino, Calif./Don Antonio Lugo H.S.) earned a no-decision, giving up four earned runs in seven innings. He remained in the game after taking a line drive off the head in the sixth, inducing an inning-ending double play from the next batter.
Jacobs and Gibbons each had three hits. Gibbons hit his first career home run to left field in the second inning.
Game Two
Jacobs had a perfect game at the plate, going 4-for-4 but the Roadrunners had just two other hits as a team with CCU righthander Marshall Crawford allowing two earned runs in the seven-inning complete game.
Jacobs scored the first run of the game on a two-out single to center by Schrupp in the bottom of the first.
The Cougars tied it with one in the fourth.
It was Jacobs again in the sixth, leading off with his first home run of the season down the left field line to give Metro a 2-1 lead.
But CCU pushed three runs across in the top of the seventh with two unearned runs aided by two Roadrunners errors.
Cammall led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Baca for the second out. Jacobs, who had singled before Baca, was picked off was caught in a rundown between first and second to end the game.
The loss spoiled another strong outing by freshman
Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.), who struck out six and allowed five hits and two earned runs in seven innings.
The two teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday.
