DENVER -
Junior righthander Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) came within three outs of a perfect game in Metro State's 8-0 win in game one, and the Roadrunners rallied for a 9-5 victory in game two as Metro swept a doubleheader at home against Western New Mexico on Saturday. The Roadrunners improved to 15-17 overall and 12-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while WNMU fell to 11-24 and 6-16.

Game One
Facing the third-best offense in the RMAC, Maul breezed through the Mustangs lineup through four innings. Meanwhile, Metro's offense exploaded for eight runs after four innings.

WNMU got its leadoff runner on in the fifth after a throw sailed high to first base on a routine ground ball, allowing the first baserunner of the game. After a pop out, Mariah McDonald broke up the no-hitter with a double down the left field line. But Maul recovered with a strikeout and a ground out to end the game after five innings.

The Roadrunners connected for 12 hits--including four extra-base hits--and scored in every inning. Maul put Metro up 1-0 with a two-out single through the left side that scored Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.).

An RBI single by Brittney Padilla (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Central H.S.) pushed the lead to 2-0 in the second and a two-run single by Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) kept the hot start to the inning alive as the first six runners reached base. A bases-loaded walk to Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.) forced home Tillery for a 5-0 lead after the second inning.

Tillery hit a solo home run with two outs in the third. Metro scored two more times in the fourth. Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) and Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) hit back-to-back doubles with two outs and Padilla drove in Clark with another single.

Tillery went 2-for-3 with three runs scored in the game. Garcia, Brew, Clark and Padilla each had two hits as well.

Maul struck out five in Metro's first one-hitter since last season.

Game Two
The Roadrunners led 3-0 after the first inning thanks to back-to-back home runs by Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.) and Maul.

But WNMU scored once in the second and four times in the fourth to lead 5-3.

Metro State rallied with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game as the Mustangs imploded with five errors in the inning.

Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) gave the Roadrunners a 6-5 lead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth that scored pinch runner Alyssa Carter (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.). Amanda Taney (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) scored later in the inning when Padilla was caught in a rundown between first and second.

Maul provided two insurance runs in the sixth with a two-run single with two outs, scoring Garcia and Mariah Griego (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.).

Brittany Moss (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) (1-6) earned her first win this season, pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Garcia, Nichols, Maul and Clark each had two hits.

Metro and Western will play twice again on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
