Baca's perfect evening not enough as baseball falls in extras

Box Score DENVER - Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) went 5-for-5 with four extra-base hits, but Metro State fell 9-8 in 12 innings at Regis University on Friday. The Roadrunners dropped to 8-15 overall and 5-12 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Regis improved to 11-14 and 6-11.

For Baca, it was his eighth multi-hit game this season as he hit two doubles and two home runs, driving in three. Gavin Purvis (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola H.S.) and Robbie Nickels (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon H.S.) also homered for Metro as the team hit a season-high four homers.

Baca's first-inning long ball gave the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead that lasted until the Rangers scored three times in the bottom of the third.

Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, Baca and Purvis opened the inning with back-to-back home runs and Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) later delivered an RBI double to tie the game 5-5.

Metro again rallied in the eighth with a two-run home run by Nickels for a 7-6 lead. But Regis again took the lead back with two in the bottom of the inning.

Daron Schulthies (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) singled down the left field line in the top of the ninth with one out, scoring Austin Hearne (Denver/Thomas Jefferson H.S.) to extend the game.

After recording two quick outs, reliever Ryan Hutchinson (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter before striking out Jon Shoutta to escape the jam and send the game to extra innings. Hutchinson pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief without allowing a run and a career-high three strikeouts.

Taylor Huyett (Broomfield, Colo./Legacy H.S.) came on with one out in the 11th and stranded a runner on second base to keep the game going. However, a back-to-back leadoff walks by Huyett in the 12th brought in Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) from the bullpen and Bob Terry hit a walk-off single through the left side.

The two teams will play a doubleheader at Regis on Saturday.
