DENVER - Trailing Colorado School of Mines by one game in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings entering Sunday, the Metro State Roadrunners looked to chase down the Orediggers and get revenge for the sweep they suffered a day earlier.
However, history repeated itself and Mines swept the Roadrunners, winning 6-3 and 5-4. Mines improved to 19-18 and extended a three game lead in RMAC play over the 16-22 Roadrunners.
It was the first time Metro State has ever been swept in a four-game RMAC series.
Game One
Aubree Maul battled Kelly Unkrich in an early pitcher's duel. The Orediggers struck first, when a throwing error allowed Allysia Cisneros to score the game's first run in the top of the third.
Metro quickly retaliated in the bottom half.
Molly Clark evened the game when she was awarded home on defensive interference. Clark was tripped rounding third on a
Kasey Nichols base hit.
Maul found herself in trouble in the fifth inning. The Orediggers loaded the bases with two out, but Metro's ace worked out of the jam by striking out Sami Springer to end the inning.
Mines claimed the lead an inning later. Molly Thiebaut homered to give the Orediggers a one run advantage.
They added to the lead in the seventh when Macy Jones blasted a two-run dinger. Later in the frame, Sarah Lustgraaf knocked a two-run shot of her own over the fence, giving Mines a 5-1 lead.
Down to its last three outs, Metro fought back. Brittany Padilla doubled to begin the inning.
Kelsey Tillery launched her Division II-leading 18th home run of the season to close the lead to three. Metro could not close the gap any further and lost by a 6-3 final.
Mines' starter, Unkrich, won her third game of the series. She surrendered three earned runs and struck out four to improve to 11-10 on the season.
Maul suffered the loss for Metro State. In 6.2 innings she, gave up two earned runs and punched out five.
Game Two
The Orediggers jumped out to an early lead. They scored single runs in each of the first three innings to put Metro in an early hole.
Mines added two more runs in the fifth frame to push the lead to five. Kamee Vessey helped spark the Mines attack with two RBIs and scored a run.
In the sixth inning, Metro threatened with two runners in scoring position. However, Ashley Goletz shut the door and kept her shut out in tact.
Down to their final out, Metro started to rally. With two runners on,
Mary Towner cleared the bases with a double.
The rally continued when an errant throw allowed Towner to score.
Kelsey Tillery walked and later scored on a
Molly Clark double.
Unkrich entered the game for Mines and managed to end Metro's comeback hopes. Unkrich recorded her second save of the season.
Mines' starter, Goletz, nabbed the win to improve to 8-7. She struck out six and allowed two earned runs.
For Metro,
Jordyn Randolph took the loss and falls to 4-8 on the season. She walked eight batters and struck out just one, with three earned runs.
The Roadrunner softball team looks to regain their winning ways when it travels to Fort Lewis for a four-game weekend. Metro returns home April 14th for Strike Out Cancer day at Auraria Field.
