KEARNEY, Neb. - Nebraska-Kearney lefthander Mike Loseke fired a complete-game shutout, blanking Metro State 9-0 on Friday night in Kearney. The loss dropped the Roadrunners to 10-21 overall and 7-18 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UNK improved to 11-22 and 10-15.
Loseke scattered six hits and five walks with five strikeouts in nine innings. The senior from Arvada, Colo., tossed the first nine-inning shutout for UNK since 2009.
Despite the gem, Metro had plenty of opportunities, getting a runner on base in eight of the nine innings, including with less than two outs in five of the frames. Three times Loseke stranded a runner on third.
Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.), who went 3-for-4 for Metro, led off the eighth with a double to right field. An error and a failed attempt at a fielder's choice loaded the bases with one out, but Loseke used a strikeout and a fly out to center to end the threat.
The Lopers broke a 3-0 lead open with five in the bottom of the sixth, aided by four unearned runs.
Freshman
Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Tanner Roth (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) gave up one earned run in 1 2/3 innings of relief, striking out three.
Forrest Carpenter (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) threw a scoreless eighth inning.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
