DENVER - Metro State, which entered the day with a one-game lead over Adams State in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, maintained that lead with a split with the Grizzlies on Friday at home. The Roadrunners took game one 9-1 in six innings, but fell 6-0 in game two.
Game One
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) did it all for Metro, throwing a three-hitter and hitting a grand slam in the game. In six innings, she did not walk a batter and struck out three.
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.)'s two-run home run in the second scored pinch runner
Amanda Taney (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) after a leadoff walk to
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.).
Maul's grand slam extended the lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning after singles by
Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.),
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) and
Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.).
The Roadrunners ended the game with three more in the bottom of the sixth. Tillery and Clark provided RBI singles and the final run came home on a fielder's choice by Nichols.
Tillery went 3-for-3 in the game, including a double to lead off the bottom of the first. The sophomore, who leads the nation in home runs, was robbed of a home run. Her blast to right-center hit off the fielder's glove and landed over the fence as ASC's centerfielder crashed through the portable fence. But the umpires ruled it a ground rule double. Tillery has 20 home runs on the season and is chasing the Metro State and RMAC record of 26, along with the national record of 28.
Game Two
Both teams had several opportunities to score early, but only ASC was able to capitalize. The Grizzlies loaded the bases with one out in both the first and second innings, but scored just one run in the top of the first as Metro escaped both jams with double plays. ASC also left a runner on second base in both the third and fourth.
Metro got a leadoff double from Maul in the second, but left her at third base. In the third inning, the Roadrunners loaded the bases with one out, but a foul out and ground out ended the inning.
ASC scored once in the sixth on a two-out single by Katelyn Lovato and used a grand slam by D.J. Consonero in the seventh to blow open the lead.
Metro State had runners on first and third with one out in the sixth, but a strikeout and pickoff at third base ended the threat.
Jordyn Randolph (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) suffered the loss, dropping to 5-10 on the season.
The two teams will play a doubleheader at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Auraria Field. It will be Strike Out Cancer Day and Senior Day for the Roadrunners.
