KEARNEY, Neb. -
Metro State's Justin Arceneaux (Chino, Calif./Don Antonio Lugo H.S.) fired a five-hit shutout in game one as the Roadrunners split at Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, winning 5-0 and losing 10-9 in eight innings. The Roadrunners led 9-2 after the top of the fifth in game two and allowed a game-tying home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

Game One
Arceneaux tossed his first career shutout and the first shutout for Metro this season, limiting the Lopers to five hits and one walk with six strikeouts. The junior lefthander allowed just one hit through five innings.

Meanwhile, the Roadrunners jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the second, scoring two on a home run to right-center by Gavin Purvis (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola H.S.). Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) also doubled and scored, and Daron Schulthies (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) came home on a single by Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.).

Gibbons added an insurance run with a solo home run in the third.

UNK loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Arceneaux escaped with a strikeout to end the game.

Game Two
Metro took an early 2-0 lead with a two-run homer by Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.), bringing home Jacobs who had doubled with two outs.

The Roadrunners extended their lead to 7-0 with five runs in the second, taking advantage of two errors. Purvis, Gibbons, Robbie Nickels (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon H.S.), Schulthies and Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) all singled in the inning.

UNK scored one in the third and once in the fourth, but Metro added two more in the fifth on a two-run single by Gibbons for a 9-2 lead.

The Lopers scored three times in the fifth and again in the sixth to trail just 9-8 entering the seventh.

Jacobs entered to close the game and got two quick outs to start the inning, but a pinch hit home run by Mike Nowak sent the game to extra innings.

UNK got a two-out single from Tommy Barnes in the bottom of the eighth for a walkoff win, scoring Brian Wuest from second base to end the game.

Jacobs, Gibbons and Nickels all led Metro with two hits each.

The two teams are scheduled to play a nine-inning game at 12 p.m. on Sunday in Kearney.
