DENVER - The Metro State Roadrunners matched up against the Adams State Grizzlies on Saturday in their final doubleheader of the season at Auraria Field. Entering the day with just a one-game lead in the RMAC standings over ASC for the final spot in the RMAC Tournament, the Roadrunners swept the Grizzlies. Metro won game one 2-0 on the strength of a one-hitter from
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.). The Roadrunners took game two by a 6-3 final.
Game One
Metro struck first as
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) led off the third inning with a triple. With two outs
Kasey Nichols (Springville, Calif./Porterville H.S.) picked up the RBI with a single for a 1-0 lead.
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) celebrated her senior day with a sacrifice fly to knock home Brittany Padilla. Clark's RBI put the Roadrunners up two after five frames.
Metro State's ace
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) held the Grizzlies hitless through six innings. Brittany Richins broke up the no-hitter to lead off the seventh.
This would be the only blemish on Maul's stat line. She finished with six strikeouts and did not walk a batter as she won her 15th game of the season.
Maul faced just one more than the minimum as she continued to dominate the Grizzlies. She allowed just four hits and one run in 14 innings in the weekend series. Her record now stands at 15-7.
Kelsey Sellars took the loss for Adams despite surrendering just two runs on seven hits. Her record fell to 5-8.
Game Two
In game two, the Grizzlies put Metro in an early hole. Three doubles in the top of the first inning propelled Adams to a 3-0 lead before the Roadrunners picked up their bats.
Metro quickly responded with a two-run first. Clark doubled and was quickly chased home on a one-bagger off the bat of fellow senior Nichols.
A double from
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.) brought home Nichols and cut the Grizzlies lead to one. The RBI was Brew's 22nd of the season and chased Adams' starter, Linda Hernandez, from the game.
After a scoreless inning from
Jordyn Randolph (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.), Metro tied the game in the second. Clark came through again with a grounder that drove home Oury.
With the score tied 3-3 in the fourth, Adams threatened again. Carly DeLorenzo smacked a single with D.J. Consenero on second, but Clark gunned down Consenero at home on a pinpoint throw.
Consecutive errors by Adams to begin the sixth gave Metro two runners in scoring position with nobody out. Pinch runner,
Mariah Griego (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) slid across the plate following a wild pitch to give the Roadrunners the lead.
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) slugged an RBI double to bring home
Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.). A base knock from
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) plated Towner to give the Roadrunners a 6-3 lead.
Randolph closed the door on the Grizzlies. She ended the game with six consecutive scoreless innings to improve to 6-10 on the spring.
For Adams, Morgan McWilliams took the loss. She allowed four runs (one earned) in 5.2 frames of relief.
Metro took 3-of-4 from Adams in the series to open a three game lead on the Grizzlies in RMAC play. The 22-24 Roadrunners conclude regular season play as they visit Chadron State next weekend.
