Baseball: Errors cost Metro in series opener

Box Score

Box Score

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -
Metro State committed a season-high seven errors as the visiting Roadrunners were crushed on the road at Colorado Mesa, 19-5 in the first game played at the newly-renovated Suplizio Field in Grand Junction.

The errors made things difficult for freshman stater Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.), who allowed just two hits through four innings. After an error should have made the second out of the fifth inning, the Mavericks exploded for five runs, including four straight hits.

Meanwhile CMU righthander Nolan Snell was mowing down hitters. Metro State got its first hit of the game with two outs in the sixth inning as potential RMAC Pitcher of the Year was wildly effective, walking seven and hitting two batters in his outing. However, he also struck out 11 in 6 1/3 innings, throwing 128 pitches in the process.

Gavin Purvis (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola H.S.) broke up the no-hitter with a single to center and Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) followed with another base hit, bringing home Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) who walked to start the inning, but Purvis and Claus were stranded in the sixth.

Metro finally got to Snell in the seventh. He walked the first two batters before a strikeout. After a walk to Levett to load the bases, Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) delivered a two-run single, scoring Chris Spirek (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) and Anthony Sylvester (Morrison, Colo./D'Evelyn H.S.). Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) capped the inning with a single to score Levett and Jacobs, greeting reliever Dakota Behr.

Jacobs led the Roadrunners with two hits in the game. Levett and his ninth-inning pinch hitter Danny Miller (Denver/Denver Christian H.S.) combined to reach base in all five plate appearances, but were 0-for-0 at the plate with four walks and a hit by pitch.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
