Box Score Box Score

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -
No. 24/21 Colorado Mesa completed its four-game sweep over Metro State on Sunday, defeating the Roadrunners 21-5 in the final game of the series in Grand Junction. The loss was the fourth straight for Metro, while CMU has won 13 of its past 14 games.

The Mavericks scored two in the first, two in the third and two in the fourth for an early 6-0 lead.

Robbie Nickels (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon H.S.) put Metro on the board with a home run to left to lead off the fifth, trimming the deficit to 6-1.

But CMU kept scoring, adding two more in the fifth, one in the sixth, four in the seventh and eighth in the eighth for a 21-5 lead.

Metro scored four in the top of the eighth before CMU's big inning as five straight Roadrunners reached base to start the frame. Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) and Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) each delivered RBI singles in the inning. Austin Hearne (Denver/Thomas Jefferson H.S.) also forced home a run, drawing a bases-loaded walk, and Nickels hit a sacrifice fly to account for the four runs.

Metro State will play at Colorado Mines next weekend.
