Baseball: Big innings cost Metro in series-opener at Mines

Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado Mines scored a season-high 17 runs, topping Metro State 17-6 on Friday night in Golden. The Orediggers pounded out 19 hits in the game.

Mines broke out for seven runs in the third, four in the fourth, four in the sixth and two in the eighth.

Metro briefly held a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) singled to open the inning and scored on a base hit after a sacrifice bunt by Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.).

Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) led off the sixth for Metro with a double to left-center. He and Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) scored on a two-out single by Cammall.

The Roadrunners opened the ninth inning with four straight singles by Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.), Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.), Baca and Danny Miller (Denver/Denver Christian H.S.). A one-out single by Claus scored Jacobs for the second run. Metro's final run scored on a fielder's choice by Cammall.

The two teams will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday in Golden at 1 p.m.
