GOLDEN, Colo. - Metro State kept its postseason hopes alive on Saturday, sweeping Colorado School of Mines on the road in Golden. The Roadrunners won 15-5 and 4-0 behind a pair of strong pitching performances.
The two wins bring Metro three games behind CSM for the final spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament with five regular season games remaining.
Game One
Metro State had season highs in hits (17) and runs (15) in the 15-5 victory.
Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) led the way offensive, going 4-for-4, while every starter had at least one hit.
Gavin Purvis (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola H.S.) was also 3-for-5 with a double and triple.
The first inning started abysmally for Metro, as the Roadrunners left runners on second and third in the top of the inning, and gave up four runs on three hits, a walk and an error in the bottom.
However, Metro woke up in the second inning, pushing three across. Purvis led off with a triple into the right-center gap. After two outs,
Robbie Nickels (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon H.S.) and
Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.) hit back-to-back RBI doubles to left, and Schrupp capped the inning with a single to left, scoring Cammall.
The Roadrunners tied the game in the third on an RBI single by Claus up the middle, scoring
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.).
A two-run fourth and a five-run fifth extended the lead to 11-4. Baca hit a bases-clearing three-run double in the fifth with two outs after Schrupp and
Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) each hit RBI singles.
Daron Schulthies (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) hit a three-run home run to left in the seventh and Purvis later scored on an error as Metro scored four times in the seventh.
Starter
Justin Arceneaux (Chino, Calif./Don Antonio Lugo H.S.) gave up a single and double to lead off the seventh before escaping the jam with just one run allowed. He threw all seven innings to improve to 3-5 on the season. Arceneaux gave up four earned runs and struck out three.
Game Two
Freshman
Mike Thill (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) fired the second complete game shutout for the Roadrunners this season, blanking the Orediggers on seven hits, walking two and striking out seven.
Cammall led off the game with a double down the left field line and scored on a single by Baca. Schrupp scored on a sacrifice fly by Schulthies as Metro led 2-0 after the first inning.
Schulthies led off the fourth with a base hit and scored on a ground out by Claus for a 3-0 lead.
Metro got another leadoff hit in the fifth by Schrupp and he came home on a single from Baca for the game's final run.
The Orediggers got just one runner past second base in the game and Thill gave up just one hit in the final three innings.
The two teams will play the final game of the four-game series in Golden on Sunday at noon.
