Baseball: Big bats break out as Metro takes series at Mines

Box Score Box Score

GOLDEN, Colo. -
Metro State hit for the cycle as a team in the first inning and had nine extra-base hits in the game as the visiting Roadrunners won 16-12 at Colorado Mines on Sunday. Metro took three of four games from the Orediggers over the weekend, leaving CSM with a two-game over the Roadrunners lead for the final spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament with four games left for each team.

Gavin Purvis (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola H.S.) went 4-for-5 with two home runs--both in the third inning--and four runs scored and three RBIs. Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) was also 4-for-5 and Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.) and Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) each had three of the team's season-high 22 hits.

Metro led 6-0 before the Orediggers got to bat, batting around and hitting for the cycle in the first frame. Cammall singled to start the game and moved to third two batters later on a double by Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.). Both came home on a home run by Baca to left-center.

Daron Schulthies (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) kept the rally going, singling to right before Purvis doubled and Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) tripled for a 5-0 lead. Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) drove in Claus with a ground out to finish the scoring in the inning.

Brad Egeberg led off the bottom of the first with a triple for Mines, but did not score until a two-out single by Garrett Schirmacher.

The Roadrunners then put together and eight-run third inning, leading 14-1 at that point. Purvis homered twice in the inning. He led off with a line drive home run to left. Robbie Nickels (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon H.S.) had a two-run double and he scored on a double by Cammall. Baca also added an RBI single in the inning before Purvis hit his second homer, a towering blast to left field.

Metro led 15-1 in the fifth when Gibbons brought in Purvis with a double down the left field line.

But the Orediggers came storming back into the game. They scored nine straight runs over three innings, including six in the sixth inning--all coming with two outs--to cut the lead to 15-12.

Schulthies drove in an insurance run in the top of the eighth, singling home Schrupp with a two-out single to center to extend the lead to 16-12.

Roadrunners closer Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) finished the game, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out three, but did not earn a save as he entered with a four-run lead.

Carlos Luzon (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Instituto Escuela) picked up the victory, throwing 5 2/3 innings.

Metro State will host Colorado State-Pueblo for four games next weekend for the final regular season games. The series will be doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, beginning at noon both days.
