Game 2 Box Score

DENVER -
Metro State dropped two games to New Mexico Highlands in a Friday double header at home, coming up short in a 9-6 comeback effort and losing 11-2 in the second game.  The Roadrunners are now 9-20 overall, including 6-17 in Rocky Mountain Athletics Conference play.  The Cowboys improve to 23-9 and 16-7 in the RMAC.

Game One
Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) hit his first home run of the season and knocked in four runs, but the Cowboys' bats were too much for Metro State to handle.

After the Roadrunners fell behind 5-0, Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) doubled in Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) to put a dent in the New Mexico Highlands third-inning lead.  After surrendering another run in the top of the fourth, Metro State went back on the offensive with a three-run bottom half of the inning.

An Anthony Sylvester (Morrison, Colo./D'Evelyn H.S.) single and a hit batsmen set up Jacobs for a two-run triple to left field.  Jacobs would come around to score two pitches later on a Baca single cutting the lead to 6-4.

The Cowboys answered in the fifth with three runs, two of which were unearned.  One inning later, Jacobs struck again with a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 9-6.  The score would not change as both teams could not score in the seventh inning.

Baca and Daron Schulthies (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) both led the Roadrunners with three hits each and Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) contributed two runs along with his two hits and four runs batted in.

Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) for Metro State would suffer the loss, dropping his record to 1-5.

Game Two
After pushing two runs across the plate early, Metro State was held scoreless as Cowboys starter Matt Gualco struck out eight on his way to a complete game.

In the bottom of the first, the Roadrunners took their first lead of the series on a two-run single by Schulthies. Metro State headed into the second inning clinging to a 2-0 lead.

That lead was short lived due to the four runs New Mexico Highlands quickly scored in the top of the second, although only two were earned.  In the next five innings, the Cowboys scored seven runs with the help of three solo home runs to seal the 11-2 victory.

Leading the way for Metro State, Jacobs notched two hits, while Baca and Schulties each contributed one.

On the mound, Mike Thill (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) was saddled with the loss giving up four earned runs on eight hits.  The defeat leaves Thill with a 3-3 record this season

This series will be concluded on Saturday with a nine-inning game beginning at noon.
