Women's soccer: Metro opens 2012 with win over No. 24 Rollins

Box Score DENVER - The Metro State women's soccer team opened its 2012 campaign on Saturday afternoon at Auraria Field, fighting through torrent winds to knock off 24th-ranked Rollins College, 4-2.

The Roadrunners (1-0) were led by junior forward Tess Hagenlock (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman H.S.), who tallied two goals and an assist after coming on in the 15th minute in relief of the injured Marie Ipock (Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas H.S.). The two-goal effort doubled her output from the 2011 season.

Metro State took its first lead of the game at the 19-minute mark when Becca Medina (Denver, Colo./Heritage H.S.) chipped the ball to the left side of the box and onto the foot of Hagenlock, who then buried the ball far corner past Rollins goalkeeper Mary Spring.

The Tars (0-1) would even the score eleven minutes later when Rollins midfielder Courtney Reddig threaded a pass through several Metro State defenders to find a streaking Brenna McKee, who snuck the ball past charging goalkeeper Jordan Simkins (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman H.S.) and into the net.

Less than a minute later, Hagenlock scored for the second time in the half after a free kick from the foot of Maggie Rojas (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) bounced between Rollins defenders in front of the net before being struck by the junior forward.

The Roadrunners would push the lead to 3-1 in the 57th minute when Hagenlock found striker Karisa Price (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland H.S.) in space. Price composed herself and dribbled just inside the 18-yard box on the left side before sending a hooking shot into the back of the net. The goal was Price's 9th of her career.

Price wasn't finished, however, as she drew a penalty kick in the 63rd-minute after being upended by Rollins defender Anita Cox. Metro State sophomore Abby Rolph (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.), who led the Roadrunners with 10 goals last season, would successfully convert the penalty kick to give the Roadrunners a commanding 4-1 advantage.

Metro will host Western Colorado at noon on Monday.
