Box Score DENVER - Littleton native
Andrew Mejia (Littleton, Colo./Mullen H.S.) scored with 9:37 left to lead Metro State to a 4-3 win over Colorado State-Pueblo on Sunday at Auraria Field in Denver. The Roadrunners improved to 5-3-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSUP fell to 3-5-1 and 1-3-1.
Mejia provided the difference-maker in a wild second half. The Roadrunners led 2-0 at halftime after a dominating first-half performance with goals from
Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) and
Marc Herschberger (Westminster, Colo./Northglenn H.S.).
But the ThunderWolves stormed back to tie the game with two goals in a span of 18 seconds in the 47th minute, and another goal less than four minutes later to lead 3-2 with 40 minutes to play. Jonny Sawyer scored the first goal for CSU-Pueblo earning a breakaway through the center of the box after two quick passes from CSUP's defensive half. Matt Marchena stole ensuing kickoff and blasted a shot from 23 yards out to the lower-right corner of the net to tie the game 2-2 at 46:21. Less than four minutes later, the ThunderWolves took the lead on another breakaway, this time for Dustin Geist.
The Roadrunners regrouped and tied the game 3-3 at 52:49 on a shot from the left wing by
Kevin Pocalyko (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.) after taking a pass from the right side from
Arek Raclawski (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek H.S.).
That score remained until 80:23 when Mejia netted the winner. He sent a deep pass from the right side near midfield to Arrubla in the left corner, who then hit a streaking Mejia at the top of the box for the shot.
Mejia tied a career high with three points in the game after assisting on Arrubla's first goal of the game. It was also the second time this season Arrubla has had a goal and an assist in the same game. Raclawski finished with a career-high two assists after helping on Herschberger's goal. Marchena had a goal and two assists for the ThunderWolves.
