Men's soccer: Arrubla's five points push Metro past SMU

Box Score DENVER - Metro State scored three first half goals in route to a 4-1 victory over St. Martin's (Wash.) on Saturday. The win increased the Roadrunners' record to 3-1 while the loss dropped the Saints to 1-3 on the season.

Brendon Hughes led the scoring attack with a header in the third minute off a corner kick from Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.).  Arrubla followed up with his own goal in the sixth minute after he stole the ball in the defensive half of the field, dribbled the ball past several defenders and was able to shoot it past the goalie to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 advantage.

The third goal of the half was then scored again by Arrubla in the 34th minute as he again stole the ball in the defensive half and shot the ball from the top of the box and over the goalie's head.  Arrubla's second goal of the game gave the Roadrunners a 3-0 advantage until the Saints responded back with a goal of their own in the 38th minute.  The goal was scored by CJ Chu after he was able to place the ball in the back of the net past goalie Shailer Thomas (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) on a loose ball that was bouncing near the top of the box.

At the start of the second half, the score was 3-1 in favor of the Roadrunners and stayed the same until the Jeremy Brooks (Phoenix/Horizon H.S.) headed in the final goal of the game in the 63rd minute.  The goal came off a corner kick from Carlos Mendez (Denver, Colo./Broomfield H.S.)

Shailer Thomas (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) saved five shots in the win for the Roadrunners while improving his overall record as goalkeeper to 3-1 on the season.  JJ Olson picked up the loss for the Saint's.

Metro State will be back in action on Friday at Auraria Field in the RMAC season opener against Regis at 3:30.  St. Martins' next game will be back home in Washington against the University of Mary.
