Box Score ELON, N.C. - Top-ranked Metro State became the first NCAA Division II team in history to win two games at the NIT Season Tip-Off, holding off Elon 75-74 in a thrilling road victory in Elon, N.C., on Monday night. The game was an exhibition for the Roadrunners, while the Elon Phoenix, picked to win the Southern Conference this season, fell to 2-4.
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) continued his torrid streak, scoring a game-high 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) and
Raul Delgado (Chihuahua, Mexico/Springville (Utah) H.S.) each had 11 and
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) scored 10.
Harrison Goodrick (Sydney, Australia/St. Joseph's College Hunter's Hill) chipped in with eight points. It was Delgado's first game in a Metro State uniform and he connected on three 3-pointers and had a game-high four steals.
The Roadrunners overcame the tough home crowd and a Phoenix team that was on fire. Elon buried 12-of-21 3-point field goals and hit 20-of-26 at the free throw line, including 7-of-11 3-pointers and 14-of-16 free throws in the second half.
The Metro State jumped out to a 10-3 lead and led by as many as 16 points when Delgado buried a 3-pointer for a 37-21 lead with 3:11 left in the first half. A late Phoenix surge pulled Elon within 40-29 at halftime. McCarron led all scorers with 11 points at the break, helping the Roadrunners shoot 48.5 percent from the floor. Elon connected on 5-of-10 from the outside.
The Phoenix cut the lead to eight early in the second half, as Sebastian Koch buried his fourth 3-pointer of the game at 16:37, cutting the lead to 47-39.
The Roadrunners got into foul trouble and Elon capitalized, cutting the lead to four at 68-64 with 5:21 left.
Tanner Samson buried a 3-pointer with 1:24 left to cut Metro State's lead to 73-72. Jefferson hit two free throws on Metro State's next possession to put the Roadrunners back up by three with 54.4 seconds to go.
A flagrant foul was called on Delgado with 32.5 seconds left and Lucas Troutman hit both free throws, cutting the lead to 75-74. Coming out of a timeout, McCarron stole a bounce pass through the post and was fouled with 13.7 seconds left. He missed the front end of the bonus free throws, but the Roadrunners got a defensive stop as time ran out on the Phoenix.
Metro State will wrap up its exhibition games at the NIT Season Tip-Off on Tuesday against Canisius at 5 p.m. (ET).
