Box Score BELLINGHAM, Wash. - A game-tying 3-pointer hit the back of the rim as time expired as No. 7 Western Washington upset No. 1 Metro State 72-69 in Bellingham, Wash., Saturday night. The Roadrunners fell to 3-1 with their first loss this season, while WWU improved to 4-0.
Metro State fell behind by 10 points midway through the second half, their largest deficit of the season. They clawed back and used a 7-2 run to cut the WWU lead to 69-67 with 1:07 left on a 3-pointer by
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.).
Vikings center Austin Bragg drove for a layup with 12 seconds to go and Jefferson answered right back, driving the length of the floor to bring the score to 71-69. WWU's Robert Harris sunk 1-of-2 free throws with 4.6 seconds left for the final points of the night.
The win was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference-record 31st in a row at home for Western Washington.
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) recorded his sixth career double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while adding three steals and three blocked shots. Freshman
Harrison Goodrick (Sydney, Australia/St. Joseph's College Hunter's Hill) was a spark off the bench, hitting 7-of-8 from the floor and scoring 15 points. Jefferson finished with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting with five assists.
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) had a rare off-night, hitting just 3-of-14 and scoring seven points.
Will Sinclair (Lilydale, Australia/Lilydale Heights College) and
Jamal McClerkin (Van Nuys, Calif./Chaminade College Prep) also scored seven each.
The Roadrunners struggled through an off-shooting first half where they connected on just 36.1 percent from the floor, 1-of-4 from the outside and 4-of-10 at the line. They faced an eight-point deficit and, despite tying the game up after that, trailed 35-31 at the break. McCarron was just 2-of-11 at the half, while Goodrick led the team with eight points by hitting all four of his shot attempts.
Metro State shot 40.3 percent in the game and just 17-of-28 (.607) at the line. The Roadrunners also won the rebounding battle 43-to-33. However, for just the second time in the past two seasons, they had more turnovers (11) than their opponent (10).
The Roadrunners open conference play at Regis University at 5 p.m. next Saturday.
