Box Score 2 DENVER - Metro State split both games on Friday as it defeated Adams State and then fell to Colorado Mines in the second game to open the 2013 season. Metro State started off the season on a positive note as it defeated Adams State 13-5 in six innings in the first game of 2013. Metro State then followed up the victory with a loss to Colorado Mines 12-0 in six innings.
Game One
Metro State scored the first run of 2013 in the first inning when
Kelsey Tillery (Windsor, Colo./Windsor H.S.) singled to center, driving
Dani Sandel (Omaha, Neb./Westside H.S.) in for a 1-0 advantage after Sandel had hit a leadoff double.
Metro State added to its scoring in the third inning as
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) hit her first RBI of the season when she singled to center field and Sandel scored her second run of the game. The next batter for the Roadrunners was
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.), who hit a home run to left field to drive in Maul and Tillery, who had reached base on a single earlier in the inning. Brew's home run game the Roadrunners a 5-0 advantage.
However, Metro State was not done scoring in the third as
Stephanie Dunham (Rio Rancho, N.M./Rio Rancho H.S.) was able to reach base on a fielder's choice. Then on the throw to try to turn a double play by Adams State,
Annalyse Garcia (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) was able to score on a wild throw to first as she rounded third base and scored to give the Roadrunners a 6-0 lead.
Adams State struck back in the top of the fourth inning when Jennie Archambault homered to center field with two outs after an error, scoring Erica Haugum in the process to cut the lead to 6-2 in favor of the Roadrunners.
Adams State was able to cut the lead even more in the top of the fifth when Katelyn Lovato hit an RBI triple to right field scoring Casey Chaney. Brittani Richins then hit an RBI single to knock in Lovato to cut the lead to 6-4 in favor of Metro State. Both runs were unearend
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Metro State responded as Brew hit her second home run of the game as the leadoff hitter for inning.
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) also got in on the home run action as she hit a solo home run to center field to give the Roadrunners an 8-4 lead.
Later in the inning,
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) hit an RBI single that scored
Amanda Taney (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.). Tillery reached on an error by Adams State and both Oury and Sandel were able to score to give Metro State an 11-4 advantage.
Adams State scored its final run in the top of the sixth inning when DJ Consonero singled to left scoring Archambault on the play.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Metro State was able to win the game on Taney's two-run double, scoring Garcia and Brew to give the Roadrunners a 13-5 advantage and a victory due to the mercy run rule.
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) picked up her first victory of the year while going six innings and only giving up one earned run. Maul also struck out five batters in the process with zero walks.
Game Two
Unfortunately in the second game on Friday afternoon, Metro State was not able to get anything going offensively as it fell to Colorado School of Mines 12-0.
The game stayed close at first as Mines did not score their its run until there were two outs in the top of the second inning when Macy Jones walked with the bases loaded scoring Melissa Marshall on the play.
Mines scored again in the second when Kamee Vessey hit a three-run double to left field to give Mines a 4-0 advantage.
Mines found the scoring column again in the fifth inning when Paige Coufal hit an RBI double to gain a 5-0 advantage.
In top of the sixth inning, Mines scored seven runs to go ahead 12-0. Metro State was unable to cut the lead to less than eight runs after six innings, so Mines was able to garner the victory 12-0 in the second game on Friday afternoon.
Metro State will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Regis at 11 a.m. and UC-Colorado Springs at 1 p.m.
