GLENDALE, ARIZ. - Metro State Men's and Women's Tennis teams had a tough weekend as the Men's Tennis team went 0-4 and the Women's Tennis team went 1-4 on the weekend to open up their spring season.
Men
Men's Tennis had a rough start to their spring season as it opened up against No. 10 Grand Canyon and unfortunately lost 9-0 on Thursday.
On Friday, the Roadrunners responded by taking two matches against No. 41 Sonoma State in a 7-2 loss.
Nick Baker (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West H.S.) defeated his opponent 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 in three sets and the doubles combination of
Gabriel Vlahos (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio de Santa Ines) and
Adrien Delvaux (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound H.S.) defeated their opponents 8-3 to give Metro State its only points.
Later on Friday, Metro State faced Azusa Pacific but were unable to win as it lost 9-0 despite a strong outing from Vlahos and Delvaux who both faced nationally ranked singles opponents and a nationally ranked doubles opponent.
On Saturday, Metro State faced its last opponent of the weekend when it lost to Fresno Pacific 8-1.
John Qualls (Henderson, Nev./Foothill H.S.) picked up the only win for the Roadrunners when he defeated his nationally ranked opponent in singles competition.
The Men's Tennis Team will be back in action when they face South Dakota State in Lakewood on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Women
Women's Tennis started the weekend off on Thursday when it lost to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe Western New Mexico 6-3. Nicole Hermann defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-2 to garner a point for the Roadrunners. Also in singles competition
Sam Schall (Glendale, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) was unfortunately unable to pick up the victory but did take a match against her opponent.
In doubles matches, both of the combinations of
Marianne Evangelista (Brighton, Colo./Brighton Charter School)/ Schall and Nicole Hermann/
Nikki Amos (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart H.S.) picked up victories against their opponents.
Unfortunately later on Thursday, Metro State fell to No. 28 Tarleton State 9-0 and then on Friday lost to No. 37 Academy of Art 9-0 before falling to Azusa Pacific 5-0 on Saturday.
The Roadrunners were able to pick up their first victory of the spring season when they defeated Chaminade 7-2 on Sunday.
In singles competition,
Cara Cromwell (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.), Evangelista, Hermann, Amos, and Schall won their matches to give the Roadrunners five points. In doubles competition, the team of Cromwell and
Alicia Holm (Las Vegas, Nev./Green Valley H.S.) defeated their opponents. The final point came when Hermann and Amos defeated their opponents to give the Roadrunners seven points and help clinch the victory.
The Women's Tennis Team will be back in action on Saturday when they face South Dakota State in Lakewood at 7 p.m.
