Box Score 2 DENVER - Mike Thill (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) pitched six strong innings in game one and
Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) capped a three-run seventh with a walk-off single in game two as Metro State swept Nebraska-Kearney in baseball on Tuesday at home. The Roadrunners took game one 11-4 and game two 5-4 to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Game One
Thill (2-0) allowed just three runs in six innings and struck out six batters to earn the win. Offensively, Metro State had 15 hits and drew eight walks.
Danny Miller (Denver/Denver Christian H.S.) led the team with three hits in four at bats, while
Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.),
Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.),
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.),
Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) and
Markie Ortivez (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) each had two.
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) was the only starter without a hit, but walked three times.
The Roadrunners jumped in front 10-0 after three innings, scoring three times in the first and sending eight batters to the plate. Back-to-back RBI singles by Baca and Schrupp in the second capped a two-run inning.
MSU struck five times in the third, using two-run singles by Cammall and Schrupp, and a run-scoring double by Baca.
The Lopers took advantage of a brief bout of wildness by Thill, scoring twice in the fourth on a pair of bases-loaded walks. They added a solo home run by Danny Droll in the sixth.
UNK added another in the top of the eighth, but Metro State answered right back when
Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) scored on a single by
Markie Ortivez (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) to keep the margin at seven.
Forrest Carpenter (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) allowed one run in 1.2 innings and
Carlos Luzon (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Instituto Escuela) allowed just one hit in 1.1 innings with two strikeouts. He stranded three inherited runners.
Game Two
After MSU led 1-0 in the bottom of the first , UNK took advantage of
Alex Hill (Casper, Wyo./Kelly Walsh H.S.)'s inability to effectively pitch inside as the left-hander hit five batters, though he allowed just two hits and did not walk a batter in three innings. However, UNK scored three times in the third, including a pair on a double down the left-field line by Chandler Klute.
The Lopers added an unearned run in the fourth off reliever
Tanner Roth (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.), but the sophomore right-hander allowed just one hit and struck out two in 3.1 innings of relief to minimize the damage.
Offensively, Metro State got one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Baldini came home on a wild pitch.
The score remained 4-2 in favor of Nebraska-Kearney until the bottom of the seventh. Miller opened the inning with a single through the right side and MSU had runners on first and second with nobody out after a dropped fly ball down the right-field line with
Andrew Paust (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) batting.
Following a sacrifice bunt by Ortivez, back-to-back walks forced in a run and MSU tied the game on a fielder's choice by Gibbons, driving in pinch runner
Chris Spirek (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.).
After an intentional walk to Baca loaded the bases, Schrupp singled through the right side to score Levett to end the game.
Patrick Gojan (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista H.S.) (1-0) earned the win in relief, striking out both batters he faced to strand runners on second and third in the top of the seventh.
Schrupp finished 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and Miller also had two hits.
