Baseball: Hammett's gem leads Metro State to road win

Box Score PORTALES, N.M. - Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) threw seven shutout innings as Metro State earned a 7-1 victory at Eastern New Mexico on Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunners improved to 4-5 overall, while ENMU fell to 11-2.

Hammett (1-1) struck out two and allowed just four hits in seven innings to earn the win.

Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.) walked to start the game and scored a two-out single by Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) as the Roadrunners led from the start.

Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and Schrupp each drove in a run in the fifth inning as MSU took advantage of two ENMU errors for a 3-0 lead.

Metro State added two more in the sixth on RBI singles from Reilly Mau (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.) and Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.).

Jacob Nelson (Lakewood, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) and Baca hit back-to-back doubles in a two-run eighth inning, helping MSU take a 7-0 lead. Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) later drove in Baca with a single for the seventh run.

A solo home run in the top of the ninth off reliever Carlos Luzon (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Instituto Escuela) provided the Greyhounds with their only run of the game. Luzon pitched two innings and struck out two to close out the game.

Offensively, Nelson, Baca, Schrupp and Mau each had two hits. Baca and Schrupp each drove in a pair of runs.

Metro State opens Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play next weekend at Colorado State-Pueblo.
