Box Score 2 DENVER - Metro State split its first day of competition on Friday afternoon as it defeated Fort Hays State 13-12 in 10 innings. Metro State followed up in the second game of the doubleheader with a 10-4 loss.
Game 1:
In the first game on Friday afternoon, Metro State was able to rally in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings and then won the game on
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.)'s two-run walk off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning.
In the game, both
Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) and Levett hit home runs for the Roadrunners. Levett also had four RBIs on the game.
Metro State started the game off strong in the second inning when Levett singled through the left side of the infield and knocked two of his four RBIs in as both
Markie Ortivez (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) and
Zac Baldini (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) scored to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 advantage.
Metro State added another run in the bottom of the third inning when Schrupp hit a solo home run to left center field.
Fort Hays answered in the top of the fifth inning when Miller was able to reach first on a throwing error from
Patrick Gojan (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista H.S.) which allowed Johnson to score for the Tigers. Later in the same inning, Thornton hit a single through the right side of the infield scoring Miller to cut the lead to 3-2.
Fort Hays added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead 4-3 after Garland singled scoring Sanders on the play and then later in the inning when Garland was able to score on a wild pitch.
In the top of the eighth inning, Miller scored after Thornton singled to right center for the Tigers. Later in the inning, Miller scored on a balk to give the Tigers an 8-3 advantage.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Metro State was able to respond with four runs to cut the lead to 8-7. Ortivez hit a single up the middle to score Paust to start the scoring rally for the Roadrunners as they cut the lead to 8-4. Later in the inning,
Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) doubled to left center scoring both Levett and Ortivez.
The final run of the inning was scored by Gibbons when the right fielder for the Tigers dropped what would have been the third out on the ball hit by
Sean Reeves (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.). The error by the right fielder for the Tigers helped Metro State cut the lead to 8-7.
In the top of the ninth inning, Fort Hays tried to put the game away as it was able to score three runs to pull ahead 11-7. However, in the bottom of the ninth inning with their rally caps on, Metro State was able to score four runs to tie the game at 11.
The first run in the bottom of the ninth came with bases loaded and
Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.) was hit by a pitch to score Paust. Two batters later, Reeves singled to left field scoring both Levett and Cammall. The tying run was then added when Schrupp singled to left field scoring Gibbons to force extra innings.
In the top of the 10th inning, Fort Hays took the lead 12-11 when Miller singled to right scoring Rule. In the bottom of the 10th Metro State was able to score the final run when Levett hit a two-run home-run with Ortivez on first base.
Mike Thill (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) picked up the win for the Roadrunners after pitching in the 10th inning and only giving up one run. Gojan pitched 6 2/3 strong innings for the Roadrunners striking out six and only giving up one run. He did a hit until the fifth inning.
Game 2:
Metro State was unable to carry on from the momentum of the first game in the second game as it fell 10-4. Metro State did start off the game strong as they came out with a 4-0 lead after the first inning, but were unable to maintain their hot bats as they did not score for the rest of the game.
The first run of the game was scored for the Roadrunners when Baldini reached on an error by the Tigers' first baseman when he dropped a fly ball which would have ended the inning. Gibbons scored on the play to give the Roadrunners a 1-0 advantage.
Later in inning, Paust tripled to left field scoring Reeves, Baldini, and
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) to give the Roadrunners a 4-0 advantage after the first inning.
Unfortunately for the Roadrunners, their offense was not able to continue as Fort Hays was able to battle back and take the lead in the fifth inning and never relinquished it in route to a 10-4 victory.
Metro State will be back in action to play the third game of the series against Fort Hays at 11 a.m.
